Faithful Voices is an embodiment of the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa's long commitment to end religious based discrimination, protect individual rights, and uphold the worth and dignity of each person.

The decision to create a formal project to address marriage equality came about in 2007 as the Varnum v. Brien marriage case before the Iowa Supreme Court and public conversation about marriage equality started receiving more attention.   Iowans of faith and goodwill working for marriage equality realized their aspirations could not be fully realized without the active, collective and prophetic voice of the progressive faith community to balance the anti-marriage religious voice that gets so much coverage in this issue.    Conversations were held with people across Iowa to determine the goals and scope of the project, before funding was sought.  A project coordinator was hired in December 2008 to staff the project, although the heart of Faithful Voice's work is made possible by the many clergy and laity volunteers in communities across Iowa, both small and large.  We also work collaboratively with our many partners for marriage equality including One Iowa, Lambda Legal, Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa and American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa.

Faithful Voices is funded by individual supporters and the generous support of the Arcus Foundation.
