Connie Ryan Terrell, Executive Director

Connie Ryan Terrell leads the statewide Interfaith Alliance of Iowa as its Executive Director since 2002.  Connie is a well known voice in Iowa's public square, Protecting Faith and Freedom in Iowa and challenging progressive people of faith and goodwill to actively shape the state's public debate on issues of religious freedom, equality, and justice.  She is frequently sought out by Iowa's media and community groups to address issues at the intersection of faith and politics.

Connie serves her community with involvement in various organizations, currently as a Board member of One Iowa, Safe Schools Task Force for GLBT Youth, and Iowa Citizen Action Network (ICAN).  She also serves on the Steering Committee of the Iowa Immigration Education Coalition.

Connie holds a Masters in Social Work from the University of Iowa and a B.A. from Drake University.

Connie lives in Des Moines with her husband, Jeff, and their two beautiful and talented teenagers.  She is very active in her faith community serving as an elder and as a youth leader.

 

Melisabeth Johnston, Project Coordinator

Melisabeth Wright joined the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa staff in October 2009 to coordinate the Faithful Voices marriage equality project.   Melisabeth has extensive experience in community organizing and a deep commitment to the goals and ideals of the progressive faith community.  She is excited to bring her passion for justice, her deep faith, and dedication to public service to help Interfaith Alliance of Iowa succeed in its goals for the Faithful Voices project.

Melisabeth has a wide breadth of community and campaign organizing experience, primarily in Missouri.  She grew up in Minnesota as the daughter of a UCC minister and has a broad understanding of communities of faith.  She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri Columbia.  She lives in Des Moines with her 100 pound dog, is a member of Plymouth Church, and is married to a fellow organizer who is currently working for economic justice in the state of Colorado.
